Just a short note to accompany the video that leapt out of me after the dog walk this morning. I had been pondering my fragile ego - and realise that it is rooted deep thanks to the gremlins of self doubt … and that we all (well, most of us - I think Liz Truss doesn’t - isn’t she a gem … oh, wait, that was the lettuce!) have similar gremlins.
My ego is salved by reviews (though, of course, only the good ones … the others feed the gremlins!)
I realised I had already forgotten the kind words the early readers sent me - people who I should respect for their judgement. I know that NONE of these people: Chris Packham, George Monbiot, Amy-Jane Beer, Kate Bradbury, Stephen Moss, and Nick Acheson would EVER be arm-twisted into saying something good unless they really meant it!
So this is just a thank you to the people who take the time to both read and then write a review … it means a lot (even if I think you have failed to understand a key point!) It is a shame that the most public of these platforms is on Amazon - but as an unemployable freelancer, I have to take whatever I can get.
And now, to briefly return the favour to a few … soon, one of the best books I have read in a while is leaping to life - Kate Bradbury’s One Garden Against the World deserves to be read and shared and I so hope you see how important it is.
Nick Acheson’s The Meaning of Geese was a brilliant meditation on these amazing birds for a person who makes my hedgehog obsession seem quite restrained!
The Flow, by Amy-Jane Beer took me by surprise - dragging me deep, but letting me reach back up to the surface.
George Monbiot needs no introduction, I think I have read all his books, but it is hard to keep track! However, I will definitely be reading his new one - The Invisible Doctrine.
I think to share the love I will start placing short book reviews up here too!
Thanks again for the readers and the writers - without you this world would be a duller place.
